A Crystal Lake FAVORITE returns to Raue Center For The Arts! The Crystal Lake Strikers All-Star Drumline will lead multiple groups of outstanding musicians from all over the region to present a high-energy night of percussion at 7 p.m. on February 23, 2019. Returning for their 10th performance, “An Evening of Percussion” is always a sellout!
Founded in 2007 to give local drummers a performance outlet, the Crystal Lake Strikers have been entertaining audiences around Chicagoland for the past 10 years. With their signature bowling shirts and “Have Fun, Don’t Suck” motto, the Strikers have become one of the most sought-after entertainers for area parades, sporting and community events.
“The Crystal Lake Strikers has performed on live television on three different occasions as well as performing numerous times in the Chicago Magnificent Mile Parade and the Chicago Thanksgiving Day Parade,” says Vice President Brett Hopkins of some of the group’s most memorable performances over the years. “In 2018, The Crystal Lake Strikers were given the honor to LEAD the Chicago Thanksgiving Day Parade!”
Over the years, The Strikers have also expanded their reach into education with five different student programs featuring varying degrees of demand, including:
- The Crystal Lake Strikers (An adult parade drumline.)
- The Strikers All-Stars (A high school indoor drumline including members from all District 155 schools.)
- Convergence Winter Guard (A competitive color guard including members from all District 155 schools.)
- Crystal Lake Thunder (competitive indoor drumline including members throughout Illinois.)
- Kingpins Drumline (A cooperative effort with the Northern Illinois Recreation Association designed to bring the excitement of drumming to students with special needs.)
“‘An Evening of Percussion’ is a venue that not only provides a venue for each one of our groups to perform but also different percussionists throughout the region,” says Hopkins. “Marching percussion, garbage cans, brooms and ladders are just a few of the instruments utilized in this fun, light-hearted event!”
In addition to performing a high-energy night of percussion, The Strikers, which has awarded over $50,000 in scholarships over the past 10 years, will also award two scholarships to local high school students during the fundraiser: The Tim Althoff Scholarship & The William Laskey Scholarship.
“The Tim Althoff Scholarship is named in honor of a devoted member of the community who died unexpectedly from a heart attack at a young age,” explains Hopkins. “Mr. Althoff was devoted to his family and to his community and he loved drumming. Given Mr. Althoff’s many contributions to the community, The Strikers have recognized these contributions by naming this annual scholarship in his honor,” continues Hopkins.
“The William Laskey Scholarship is presented in honor of the late band director of the nationally-recognized Heraldry Guard marching band based in Crystal Lake,” says Hopkins. The scholarship has been awarded since 2017, when a group of Mr. Laskey’s former students decided to honor his impact on the community.
“We are blessed to have the Raue Center in the heart of Crystal Lake and the renovated theater provides a fantastic venue for local percussionists to showcase their talents,” says Hopkins. “As an organization, we take pride in the name ‘Crystal Lake’ Strikers, given the tremendous support we are provided by local businesses and individuals,” he continues.
“Giving back to the community through this fundraising event is yet another reason we keep coming back for more!”
